July 22, 2008 81 per cent vote 'Yes' to day off The Sunday Times published a one page report by Jamie Ee Wen Wei on 6 July 2008 about 'maid abuse'. Readers were invited to respond to the question 'Should maids get a mandatory day off?' The newspaper published the result on 13 July. 230 people voted - 81 per cent said 'Yes' and 19 per cent said 'No'. The current Day Off campaign is a public education undertaking that encourages employers to give their domestic workers regular days off voluntarily. While the 'Sunday Times' poll figure is not a large one, it does offer one more indication that there is a significant body of opinion in Singapore that favours domestic workers having the right to days off. |
